Bridging parametric and nonparametric measures of species interactions unveils new insights of non?equilibrium dynamics

A central theme in ecological research is to understand how species interactions contribute community dynamics. Species are the basis of parametric (model-driven) and nonparametric (model-free) approaches theoretical empirical work. However, despite their different interpretations across these approaches, measures have occasionally been used interchangeably, limiting our opportunity use differences gain new insights about systems. Here, we revisit two most approaches: measured as constant direct effects (typically approaches) local aggregated approaches). We show fundamental properties that cannot be revealed without bridging definitions. First, intraspecific effect summarizes all potential pathways through which one impacts itself, likely negative even any self-regulation mechanism.
